I see them daily, young and old, pausing for a moment or two, scouring the hedgerows for Autumn’s gift. Blackberries, of course. You’ll be hard pushed to find a simpler pleasure than blackberry picking. Foraging for these little gems and marrying with other free fruits is the epitome of frugal living. There is also something equally wonderful about joining in the pastimes of centuries gone by, you can just imagine the likes of Elizabeth Bennett hitching up her skirt and springing across the fields in search of berries!
With far less whimsy we set out on our own search. Our route had been largely stripped bare by early rising dog walkers but what little we found was promptly polished off by Florence before they had time to be stowed away. An excursion that involved hunting and eating went down a joyful treat for this hollow legged toddler. But the greater joy is still to come, as they say the proof is in the pudding…
How do you enjoy your blackberry harvest? Baked in a crumble, swirled in a cheesecake, perhaps scattered atop your porridge or made into jam. Me? I prefer mine simmered down into a syrup, served with a shot of gin and topped up with ice cold processo.
